Conference 09 @ Orlando Day 3

Day 3

Today is the third day of the conference, after a big good breakfast, we continued the group discussions from yesterday. In our group we continued on yesterday’s topic, Bodhisattva and volunteer. Everyone talked about several examples of “Give hope to others, give joy to others, give confidence to others, and making things convenience for others.” Even the camp leader, Sharon, shared with the group her opinions; she says we can give joy and confidence to others in our daily life, even it’s just a simple “Good job” or “Thank you” will do the magic. Venerable Chueh Lin also shared with the group an example of a volunteer who is unwilling to participate, and asked the participants to brainstorm on ways to approach that unwilling volunteer, and bring him or she to the volunteering path of Bodhisattva.

The meditation led by Venerable Man Guang is a refreshing and relaxing experience of the mind and body. We started with doing simple exercises. Then we crossed our legs, trying so hard to do the lotus position, closed our eyes, and meditated. After the sitting meditation we also did the walking meditation, which was a really great experience for all of us.

The Night of Buddha's Light

This is an activity in which you can totally see how much Orlando Staff put into this event and want to make everyone's experience worthwhile. Although it's a lot of trouble, Orlando Staff set up the stage outside on the court yard with all the equipment outside in the risk of getting wet in the rain.

All the performances were awesome. There were not just YAD's performances, Orlando Yad also invited a Traditional Japanese Drum group to play for us. Our YAD performance was very good; all the hard work and practice finally paid off. But the best part comes after lights out for the Candle ceremony and night chanting. After everyone put their candles down on the ground to form a lighted BLIA YAD, Orlando staffs showed the best fireworks show ever. When all the beautiful and colorful fireworks bloom in the sky like a thousand flowers and stars, a very nice and relaxing song was played. The fireworks showed the hard effort the Orlando staffs put into this conference, and the beautiful music represented the kind hearts of each and every Orlando staff. Everyone really enjoyed it.

Conference 09 @ Orlando

After the half day tour at downtown Disney in Orlando, our team got to the Guang Ming Temple for the conference registration. While we were waiting, we played several ice breaker games in the dinning hall. After we all paid our money and took our pictures (a normal one and a goofy one^o^), We had some time to set up our YAD posters. This year there are a total of thirteen subdivisions, Dallas, Fremont, Houston, LA (yeah), Miami, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Orlando, San Fransisco, St. Louis, South Bay, and Toronto . Ours and Fremont have the largest group of 18 members each.

After a little bit of meeting different people from different subdivisions and check out everyone's posters, we all went to the Main Shrine, where tables are set up and foods are smelling amazingly good. What's even more amazing was the night shows and performances. Orlando invites many talented people to do a great diversity of shows, such as the Flamingo dance, Pi-pa (an instrument) playing by Jianp Yang(楊劍萍 who performed for US president in the white house before (btw, that was an awesome performance, everyone was asking for an Encore song after she finishes her first cheerful song, so she did a second one, which was a powerful yet sad song that talks about 項羽), singing (performed by an Orlando girl named Sarah Wu), 扯鈴(performed by Casper from Miami, in the dark because his 扯鈴 has colorful LEDs), 川劇變臉, and 呼拉圈表演。

In between the performances there were also funny games designed by Orlando, and a skit about the history of Orlando. It was very educational and extremely FUNNY! After dinner, each subdivision takes turns to sign up for tomorrow's discussion groups. Everyone exchanges ideas about which discussion he/she wants to go excitedly. Then we take the shuttle bus back to the hotel and practiced our skit and cheer. We will rock tomorrow for sure!

Good Night everyone at LA. We miss you all :)

2007 Hawaii - Los Angeles Buddhism Retreat at Hsi Lai Temple

Our friends from Hawaii.

During an introduction (Seems as if we have known each other for a long time, isn't it?!);
Fanny (on stage) from NY is our MC :)

The wonderful beautiful Hawaiian dance.

During the two days camp on March 15 and 16, 2007, we learned a lot about Buddhism, Buddhist instrument, stories of the Buddha, Ven. Master Hsing-Yun's teachings, meditation; we had a basketball competition, did Buddhism skits together, and much much more!!

Reflection
The Buddhism Retreat was a great experience for me. I’ve learned through my years in YAD that having a fun activity is not the most fun part, but to have actually learn something that’s meaningful and useful for the rest of your life. This Buddhism retreat will be the best example. The Buddhism classes, when presented in an interesting way, become such a powerful thought to have in mind. I wish I can remember to use it when coping with life’s difficulties and my frustrations in the future.

Spring Progress Report

Neighborhood pty

2007-01-06 In the neighborhood party helded for Hsi Lai Temple's neighbors in the local area, YAD LA presented the "Triple Jam Jungle Dance," which is an energetic and easy to learn song/dance. At the end of our performance, many of our neighbors and friends joined us on stage and danced with us! This was the best aknowledgment and applause for us.

familynite group

First family night in 2007!!! On March 10, 2007 we had a good feast at Annelora's house in Fullerton, and were very furtunate to have two venerables--Ven. Miao Kong and Ven. Chueh Ching to give us speeches about Buddhism.

bonfire

On March 24, 07, YAD LA hosted a bonfire event at the Huntington Beach. Although it was unexpectedly cold that day, it did not scare the young members of YAD away. It was nice to step on the sand and water. When it got dark, we sat around the bonfire, roasted marshmallows and enjoyed the warmth. We spent a good time talking to each other and got to know each other better. It was not just a bon fire event; therefore, it was a “bond-around-fire” event for YAD LA. and it went smoothly and warmly.

Rivers combine to become one great ocean.

Rivers Combine To Become One Great Ocean

The year has had another new beginning, so has our YAD Los Angeles. This year, our advising venerable is Venerable Miao Kong, who has recently transferred from Taiwan. Venerable Miao Kong is very kind and supportive to our YAD, and we are very happy to have her as our advising venerable.

As many of you may know, our newly elected president for the next two years is Calvin Lee. Calvin was awarded in winter, 2006 as the outstanding member of our subchapter. He was also one of the project leaders for Buddha's Light Children's Summer Camp last year. He has many great ideas and is very passionate about our subchapter. We all look forward to the next two years under Calvin's lead.

Moreover, who is the most important partner for the president? Yes, it's the vice president. In the next two years, the vice president will be Tommy Lin! Tommy has been involved with YAD LA for a few good years. It is also not Calvin and Tommy's first team up. In the Children's Summer camp in 2005, Tommy, Calvin, and two others form the group, "Buddha Boys." They rocked the floor with their awesome dance performance. Calvin and Tommy will surely make a great team.

However, a team does not consist of just two people. Our subchapter is very happy and honored to have many new staff to join us. Please go to our forum: http://groups.msn.com/BLIAYADLAForum/welcome.msnw for the complete 2007 committee list.

As the title states, "Rivers combine to become one great ocean". This year our YAD LA subchapter is under the guidance of our advising Venerable Miao Kong; the lead of the two great partners, president Calvin and vice president Tommy; as well as the combined power of every new and old members and staff. This great team will surely bring our subchapter to more people in the community and rock the floor once more!

From Cub to Bear

2006YAD_Retreat funny small crop

“How much can a young adult gain from attending a retreat? How can we make the retreat most fun and educational? How can we combine Buddhism with fun activities together and what kind of environment can we provide for a young adult to learn leadership skills?” These are the questions the planning committee of the “2006 California YAD youth retreat” asked themselves the most. With the goals of providing a fun environment of learning Buddhism and leadership skills for the young adults of YAD in mind, YAD LA, Hsi Lai youth team, and South Bay YAD worked hard together to present the “2006 California YAD youth retreat” in December 28, 2006.

The theme of this retreat was “From Cub to Bear.” In order to become a bear, one has to go through many different changes. First there are many useful seminars and workshops such as “Marketing Yourself & YAD,” “Public Speaking,” “Basic Photo Class,” “Leadership seminars,” etc. In Marketing Yourself & YAD, successful role models such as Daniel Deng, attorney of law; Joaquim Lim, mayor of Walnut; Matthew Lin, mayor of San Marino, and Kenny Chang, CEO & president of KCal Insurance Agency were invited to speak to the young adults about preparing and presenting oneself for the big world. In Public Speaking workshop, the participants had a chance to learn about and critique on an oral presentation, and how it can be applied and used in real life. In the “Basic Photo Class,” students were introduced to how to take good pictures for activities. This class helped to train excellent historians of future YAD’s. In the Leadership seminar, leadership skills were interweaved and practiced with fun activities and followed by reflective discussions.

There are also many educational and fun activities that allow the participant to learn about leadership as well as Buddhism, such activities are: “Treasure Hunts in the Temple,” “Vegetarian Iron Chef,” and “Buddha’s Light Night Show.” These activities gave the participating young adult an opportunity to learn and experience Buddhism from completing the goals of each activity. For example, each group was given a Buddhism-related quote from Master Hsing-Yun, and was instructed to perform the meaning of quote through singing, dancing, and acting. The outcome was impressive: each group took the quote, understood it, analyzed it, applied it to real life, added in their personal ideas and experiences, and created excellent performances, such as musical, plays, and rap songs.

Sharing - Inspiration Camp

It was hard to image what a weekend of "self-inspiration" would be like. What would I learn from just playing games at a park? How would I work as a team with others if I hardly knew them?

When we first arrived at the park, it was cold, and the grass was wet. It seemed like no one really wanted to spend the day out in the muddy field. With this strange man beginning to tell us how much we were going to learn and told us when to give him thumbs up, it was clear that more people we getting more weary over this weekend. However, the mood began to change when we started getting into some ice breakers. Next thing we know, we were in groups, figuring out a way to get the stuffed dog before the other team. It wasn't long before everyone was laughing and really getting involved in all the activities.

Before we knew it, it was the last day and we were enjoying our lunches and chatting away about the activities from the day before. Although we struggled through a couple of challenges that our teacher offered us, in the end we were still able to unite as a group to complete our goal.

This weekend was filled with back to back games and challenges that pushed us to learn how to become a leader and an affective team member. From the "save-the-dog" game to making our own lunch, it is clear that everyone who attended this event have learned how to listen to others, be open-minded and work with others as a team. (Emily)

Halloween at Temple –by emily

"Spooky fun" is the phrase that best describes the Hsi Lai Haunted House event on Saturday, October 28th. The members of YAD LA hosted a very elaborate and fun-filled Halloween celebration by setting up a Haunted House in the old gift shop and another one in the hallway beneath Bodhisattva Hall. They separated the Haunted House into several sections: The hell of eye pecking, hand and legs, tongue ploughs and burning iron beds. After visiting all these areas the tour guide leads the visitors to the next part of the tour. They are led to the entrance of the hallway and are asked to enter one at a time, where they are greeted by a girl who looks like she came from a Japanese horror film. She rises up and offers you a piece of candy from her long sleeve for the visitor's journey back.

Besides the creepy Haunted House, there was also a game station held in classrooms 1 and 2. South Bay and Hsi Lai YAD members prepared games, face painting and refreshments for the guests. At this part of the evening, people were able to interact with each other. With Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and "The Monster Mash" playing in the background it was easy for people to have fun.

After everyone had their turn into the Haunted House, it was time for the Pumpkin Carving! The pumpkins were brought in and everyone was asked to split up into small groups of 2 or 3. Guests were given tools and one hour to carve up their creations. Once each group was done, their pumpkin was taken outside and lit up. When everyone finished, Venerables were elected as judges to decided who was the most creative. The winner was announced and the event was drawn to a close.

Not many people have spent Halloween in a Buddhist temple, but judging from this event more people should. Hsi Lai's Haunted House Halloween party turned out to be a success and I can't wait to see what is in store for us next year!

Self Inspiration Camp

A very special event called Self-Inspiration Camp was held on the weekend of September 31st and October 1st, 2006. YAD LA was honored to have trainer Jian lead this camp. Mr Jian invited several senior members of YAD LA to join him and designed a series of adventure-based experiential curriculum for all southern California YAD members, including Hsi Lai, South Bay, and San Diego chapter.

The event began on the grass field at Whittier Narrows Park. In the short introduction of camp rules, Mr. Jian asked every participant to do one simple thing: if the youths agree with Mr. Jian, or each other’s opinions, the youths will show a “thumbs-up” gesture and speak out loud “I agree” to show that they paid attention and heard what was discussed, and agreed with the conclusion. Throughout the two day event, everyone indeed executed this action very well and demonstrated how much each and every youth wanted to better themselves.

Throughout the two days event, the youths have learned from the activities and games to let go of their ego, listen, and respect other people’s opinions, and coorporate with each other to overcome challenges and to achieve the team’s goal. At the end of the second day, each participants shared what they have learned: if everyone only accepts only one’s own opinion, then the team will collapse. However, if everyone will listen to each other’s opinion, try to organize these opinions and cooperate, the power this team will demonstrate will truly be amazing.

When concluding the event, Mr. Jian also encouraged these youths to take what they have learned in these two days and apply these experiences to school, work, family, or any other groups. He believes that the youths will better themselves by doing so, and he will then come back next year to take the youths to more awesome adventures and challenges.

Kids Camp sharing by Emily

I knew that my first time helping at kids camp would be a really fun experience, but I had no idea I would learn so much. It was really fun being able working with so many people as a team. My most memorable moment in kids camp was when the first kids began to show up. Because some kids were early, we began to place "duck-duck-goose" and as more kids arrived the circle got bigger and bigger. I enjoyed this moment because I saw
how much fun these kids were having with such a simple game. Kids camp gave me the opportunity to make new friends, have fun and at the same time, be able to provide these kids with an experience that they will never forget. GO MaNNY!!! wOot!

Summary of Summer Time

Kids Camp 2006

The theme for this year's Buddha's Light Children's Summer Camp is -- ICE AGE!!!

Picture
Top left:This years Kids Camp Banner -- very icy

Top Right: Group "Sid" sitting in a straight line quietly. I couldn't believe they could be that quiet!
Bottom Left: One of kids' favorite activity, car wash. They are really trying their best to wash the cars!
Bottom Right: Buddhist Etiquette Lecture, Ven. Chueh Huang teaches the kids to sit up straight. She is pulling the "invisible string" on top of the girl's head to help her sit up straight.

Summary of Summer time

IBLYAC 2006

This year, the So-Cal power was united together and showed the spirits of Californians in the IBLYAC - International Buddha Light Young Adult Conference - in Taiwan.

The team consisting of eighteen people, under the lead of Ven. Yi Chao, flew back to Taiwan for the 10th annual youth conference. The theme for this year’s conference was “Self Awareness and the Buddha’s Way.” During the three-day-two-night conference, our youths learned about Buddhism not only in classes, but experienced the Buddha’s Way in eating, walking, sleeping, and from interacting with hundreds of other youths from around the world.

When asked about their experience at the conference, Calvin expressed, “Conference was pretty cool! I thought the way we ate lunch(過堂) was going to be boring but I thought it was pretty fun and I liked it. The Pilgrimage (朝山) was hard but I also liked that a lot too.” Ann Rose also expressed that many of the presentations, posters, and performances presented by other YAD subdivisions were quite impressive. It was a good eye and mind opening experience.

As for the issues discussed and “homework” assigned, our YAD South Bay member Theresa Tsao shared her experience at an NGO (Non-Government Organizations) conference held last year at the United Nations. She especially felt that we can contribute more on one of the goals – Ensure environmental sustainability. Ven. Hui Chuan agreed and immediately decided to give this task - to promote the use of environmental-friendly chopsticks to all the Los Angeles youths. Both YAD South Bay and YAD LA proudly accepted this mission.

Farewell Leo
One of our most senior members in YAD LA is departing from this group and heading to Mississippi to pursue his new career path. On September 16, 2006, we held a surprise party for him after the YAD LA's monthly meeting at the Conference Room. It was a heartfelt and warm gathering. When Leo was carried into the room by four other guys, Penny and Angel were singing a beautiful song. The lights were turned off and the curtains were drawn shut so the candle light spelling, “Good Luck,” can easily be seen.
Although the candle lights are small, the wishes they carry are big. When we circled around Leo and told him from our hearts, how we felt about him, what we knew about him, and our deepest wishes and good thoughts for him, it truly was a touching moment. Although tears are flowing out and sadness of saying goodbye start to gloom the room, the laughter, trust, and friendship are like the candle light, which may seem small, but its warmth reaches far and deep, and is surely the most unforgettable.
To Leo: although we cannot physically be with you in Mississippi but remember
our friendship and wishes will be with you no matter where you go.

TRI-YAD
